ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I create literary and cross-genre works that explore themes of personal transformation, grief, trauma, and feminism. Much of my work is set in the Pacific Northwest, highlighting lush, haunting elements of the environment. My characters often struggle under the constraints of American society and seek escape to freedom in its many forms.

As an existential feminist, I believe that existence precedes essence: we are human before we are gendered. My characters are examples of this concept, denying traditional gender roles and pursuing authenticity.

Drawing from lived experience in various countercultural movements—including, but not limited to, legal cannabis and punk ethos—I am compelled to investigate myths and realities of the American Dream and life lived outside mainstream society.

I treat my characters with an objectivity that allows them to develop freely and that encourages readers to empathize with people they may otherwise judge or ignore. I challenge readers to think dialectically and to expand their views beyond the binary typically on offer by modern American culture.
